The Beauty in the Chaos: What Returning to Naples Taught Me About Home, Healing, and the Coast We Choose

Every time I return to Naples, I remember that beauty doesn’t always arrive in silence.

Sometimes it arrives on a scooter weaving through impossibly narrow streets. Or in the sound of church bells echoing over centuries-old piazzas. Sometimes it’s a grandmother leaning out her window to greet a neighbor, or an espresso served because hospitality is simply a way of life.

There is a beautiful kind of chaos in Naples. It moves fast, yet somehow never feels rushed.

As someone whose family is from Naples, returning never feels like a vacation. It feels like remembering. There is something grounding about knowing your roots run through the same volcanic coastline, the same fishing villages, and the same traditions that have shaped generations before you. I’m proud to have Neapolitan blood. It’s a heritage that values family over schedules, quality over excess, and gathering around a table as one of life’s greatest luxuries.

One of my favorite places I return to, just a short ferry ride from Naples, is Ischia.

Known for its natural thermal waters, Ischia has welcomed people seeking healing since Roman times. The island reminds us that wellness isn’t always found in the latest trend. Sometimes it’s mineral-rich water emerging naturally from the earth. It’s salt air filling your lungs. Fresh seafood caught that morning. Walking instead of rushing. Sunshine instead of fluorescent lights.

What fascinated me most was learning more about why these waters have attracted people for thousands of years. The volcanic island sits atop an active hydrothermal system where rainwater, ancient fossil water, mineral-rich seawater, and geothermal heat combine beneath the Earth’s surface before naturally emerging as thermal springs. Researchers from the University of Naples have found these waters contain a unique thermal microbiota, a living ecosystem of beneficial microorganisms alongside naturally occurring minerals, that may contribute to their therapeutic properties. The warm mineral waters are used to support circulation, ease muscle and joint discomfort, promote relaxation, and stimulate the body’s own self-regulating systems. Even more interesting, studies suggest that immersion in thermal water provides positive sensory stimulation through temperature, minerals, buoyancy, and gentle water pressure, sending calming signals throughout the nervous system. Standing in those waters, surrounded by the Mediterranean, I couldn’t help but think this is exactly how wellness was meant to feel, not rushed or manufactured, but woven into daily life by nature itself.

The Italians have always understood something we’re only beginning to rediscover: where you live quietly shapes how you live.

For generations, Italians have recognized something special about this coastline. San Pedro became home to thousands of Italian fishing families who saw familiar cliffs, working harbors, and the same relationship with the sea they had left behind.

It’s another reminder that home is rarely chosen by accident.

When I returned to Palos Verdes, I noticed something I always do after visiting Italy.

The dramatic coastline. The rolling hills. The eucalyptus and cypress trees swaying in the breeze. The slower roads. The horses. The ocean stretching endlessly toward the horizon.

It feels familiar.

No, it isn’t the Amalfi Coast. It isn’t Ischia.

But it offers something remarkably similar: a way of living that invites you to exhale.

That is one of the reasons I love helping people find homes here. I’m not simply helping clients purchase real estate. I’m helping them invest in a lifestyle that encourages morning walks by the ocean, evenings watching sunsets over the Pacific, and weekends that don’t have to feel rushed.

Luxury, to me, isn’t measured in square footage.

It’s measured in how your surroundings make you feel.

If you’ve fallen in love with the Italian coast, or simply long for a life with a little more beauty, a little more calm, and a little more la dolce vita, you don’t have to cross the Atlantic to find it.

There are places here along the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the South Bay where that feeling exists.

I’d be honored to help you find your own coastal escape.

If Naples and the surrounding islands are on your travel list, I’d be delighted to share my favorite local recommendations, from hidden beaches, informative tours, vespa and boat rides, to the best thermal parks and day trips. Consider it my complimentary insider guide from one Neapolitan family to another.

Here's to slow living, beautiful homes, and creating a life worth savoring.
